The Spruce Bark Beetle and Drones
Increasing Challenges with the European Spruce Bark Beetle in Sweden
The spruce bark beetle destroys several million cubic metres of spruce forest in Sweden every year. For forest owners, this means large monetary losses of several billion.1
In addition, the damage caused by the spruce bark beetle is expected to increase in large parts of Europe in the future.2
The best way to prevent the spread of the spruce bark beetle is to harvest and remove infested trees from the stand, but it is estimated that over 75 % damaged forest is left behind. Detection and response are often delayed because forest owners do not have sufficient capacity to manage the infestation.3
More effective inventory methods lead to faster action, a healthier forest with better carbon storage and a secured asset for high-quality timber.
