Drones and forest fires
Drones in the fight against forest fires
Forest fires are a recurrent and serious challenge in Sweden, especially during dry summers. With climate change, these fires are becoming more frequent and intense. Drones have proven to be an invaluable tool in the management of forest fires, but also in planned prescribed burns, both before, during and after they happen.
By using drones, we can monitor risk areas, quickly detect and map ongoing fires, and assess the damage after the fire has been extinguished. This reduces the risk of spread and helps protect both people and the environment.
It should also be said that forest fires have a function in nature as they naturally clear away dead plants and release nutrients that favour new growth. They also create open spaces that allow light to reach the ground, favouring plant diversity and regrowth. Using drones, we can monitor and document this natural recovery and understand how the ecosystem evolves after a fire.
