Inspection of power lines - Kautokeino, Norway

How Copture helped Vissi AS inspect 800 power line pylons in northern Norway - no climbing, no helicopter

Kautokeino. Northern Norway. Winter climate, rugged mountainous terrain and sub-zero temperatures. Along this landscape run power lines that supply the region with electricity - and each point of construction must be assessed for a permit.

Vissi AS needed to conduct a comprehensive inspection of power lines in one of Norway's more challenging areas - 800 masts in terrain with limited access. The solution came via Copture, in collaboration with Arkion.

The challenge: Inspecting 800 power line pylons in northern Norwegian terrain

Vissi AS is a Norwegian electricity network operator that owns and operates critical infrastructure in northern Norway. For a planned inspection of the power line network in Kautokeino, they were faced with a practical challenge: 800 plant points scattered across terrain with limited road access and difficult winter conditions.

A traditional inspection of power lines requires staff to go to each individual point of installation - in this case, a so-called top inspection of 800 masts. Helicopters were costly, noisy and difficult to justify environmentally. A solution was needed that could cover all 800 masts - quickly, safely and with minimal impact on the environment.

How to carry out a comprehensive inspection of power lines in challenging terrain - without climbing, without helicopters and without compromising data quality?

The solution - airborne inspection of power lines instead of ground operations

Copture was responsible for the execution of the assignment on behalf of Vissi AS, with Archion as an analysis partner. Certified UAV operators carried out the inspection on site in Kautokeino with equipment qualified for northern Norwegian winter conditions.

All 800 masts were documented with high-resolution aerial imagery - top structures, insulators, brackets and any anomalies were systematically covered without the need for field staff to go to each site. No climbing, no helicopter noise, minimal environmental impact.

The entire flow was handled by Copture: from operational planning, permit management with Norwegian aviation authorities and logistics on site, to image delivery and quality assurance of collected material.

The collected inspection material was then delivered to Archives AI platform, where technicians analyzed each facility point to identify damage, wear and tear and anomalies - and compiled a priority action plan for VISSI.

"Copture's UAV inspection provided us with a comprehensive picture of all 800 plant points in Kautokeino. We got the data we needed to prioritize the right maintenance actions - without having to send staff out to each individual mast. Efficient, safe and with good data quality."
- Are M Larsen, Operations Engineer, Vissi AS

The result - safe inspection, complete data and the right priorities

800 power line masts inspected - all plant points covered with high-resolution image data

No climbing, no helicopter noise - UAV operators on site carried out the inspection safely and efficiently

Complete decision-making basis delivered to Arkion for prioritization of maintenance actions

Reduced risk and cost compared to helicopter or climbing-based inspection

Short lead time - flight, image delivery and quality assurance completed within the agreed timeframe
