Questions about the spruce bark beetle are answered by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the Swedish Forest Agency

Dry and warm weather has favoured the spruce bark beetle, putting this small insect in the spotlight in recent years. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has been working with authorities and landowners for a long time to find effective ways to manage the spruce bark beetle. Here we have compiled answers to some frequently asked questions about spruce bark beetles from SLU and the Swedish Forest Agency, among others.

SLU conducts research to better understand the spruce bark beetle, find new methods for detecting infestations and plan for forests that are more resistant. In environmental monitoring, we follow how the population and infestations vary between years and develop new methods for monitoring spruce bark beetles, including using remote sensing. It is based on these experiences that SLU answers questions.

On these pages we collect and write about articles and research related to forestry and in particular current challenges such as top breakage, windfalls and attacks from pests and fungi such as spruce bark beetle and dry rot. The articles may also address how drones and orthophotos can assist in forest management.
