Dangerous trees are now being removed on footpaths infested with spruce bark beetle.

According to an article on svt.se the county administrative board in Kronoberg has removed trees close to hiking trails on Helgö outside Växjö after spruce bark beetles attacked the trees, increasing the risk for people to move around in the forest.

Infestations in recent years have made some trees weaker and dangerous to fall. The County Administrative Board is carrying out a clearing operation to make the public feel safe.

The hiking trails on Helgö have been cleared since 2018 and the last tree protection measure was done in 2021, where the dead wood has been left behind to preserve biodiversity.

On these pages we collect and write about articles and research related to forestry and in particular current challenges such as top breakage, windfalls and attacks from pests and fungi such as spruce bark beetle and dry rot. The articles may also address how drones and orthophotos can assist in forest management.
